The research projects developed have been modified over the years according to the possibilities, the academic profiles of the teachers and Brazil´s and the Army´s needs.

In 1969 the Organic Synthesis research line focused on the synthesis of drugs, seeking ways to make the country independent of the importation of inputs for the production of some drugs considered basic by the Central of Medicines (CEME) or by the Ministry of Health. In 1972 research line in Spectrometry / Spectroscopy started and it was initially directed to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). On the same year was created the research line in Catalysis, an innovative concept. Aiming to keep the program at the cutting edge of scientific development, the molecular modeling line was started in 1990, and our course was one of the pioneers in Brazil in this important branch of chemistry, which is now considered as essential in several areas of high research level and, in our case in particular, finds applications in the design of drugs, studies of energy materials, physicochemical properties of molecules and studies of dispersion of chemical and biological agents. Finally, in 2003, the line of research in Chemical Technology was inserted, which aims to attend to a multidisciplinary action in the scope of projects directed to the interface between different lines of research, as well as to enable a greater integration between the undergraduate course in Chemical Engineering and the PG Program in Chemistry.

The PG Program in Chemistry at Masters and theDoctoral level was accredited by the Federal Council of Education in 1980 and re-credited in 1987, according to Opinion No. 224/87. The Program formed, until March 2011, 246 Masters and 69 Doctors distributed in the various specialties. Our alumni have been successful in the industry and in government research institutes acting as researchers. Many alumni also make up the faculty bodies of federal, state, and private universities. In addition, SE / 5 maintains scientific and technological exchange with several universities and national and foreign research institutes.

The PG Program in Chemistry continues with its innovative spirit as can be seen from the themes of theses and dissertations. Additionally, it allows interactions with graduation end-of-course projects and scientific initiation projects. If on the one hand we seek to be innovative in our research, on the other hand we keep the formal part of the program fairly stable, introducing the changes gradually and only making them permanent after a period of evaluation.
