Course Description

With the beginning of the teaching activities of the Graduate Program in Defense Engineering (PGED) as of February 2007, the Military Engineering Institute (IME) seeks to effectively guide its courses and research for the Defense area and for the needs of the Brazilian Army (EB). This objective is in accordance with the guidelines of the Department of Science and Technology (DCT) of the EB and with the National Defense Policy, launched in June 2005 by the Ministry of Defense, regarding the scientific and technological capacity of the Forces Armed and Civil Society.

The PGED aims to meet the national demand by highly qualified and specialized personnel, investing in training based on quality basic research and with international insertion. PGED courses have as main purpose the qualification of professionals with a higher level than the performance of research and teaching activities, enabling military and civilian students to broaden and deepen their knowledge in the different areas of ENGINEERING and SCIENCES focused on SCIENTIFIC-TECHNOLOGICAL problems of interest of the NATIONAL DEFENSE.

The program seeks to train its students through stimuli to the attributes of creativity, technical competence and intellectual leadership. It should be emphasized that a solid background in basic research, generating knowledge and dissemination in the main congresses and international scientific journals, will also allow the graduate to work with applied research in research centers and in the industries and may still be part of the staff of the various organs of the Ministry of Defense.

The program has an INTERDISCIPLINARY character, and the courses are offered at the level of ACADEMIC MASTER and PhD. Students are directed to undertake interdisciplinary theses and dissertations, and the disciplines to be studied reflect this need for broad training.

The teaching activities are structured on a four-monthly basis with three academic periods during the year. Admission of students may occur in any of the academic periods, although there is a need for prior consultation with the coordination of the course to know whether or not to open a selection process.

The program comprises a AREA OF CONCENTRATION, DEFENSE ENGINEERING, COMPOSED OF THREE LINES OF RESEARCH: COMMUNICATIONS AND INTELLIGENCE IN DEFENSE, MECHATRONIC AND ARM SYSTEMS, AND MODELING AND SIMULATION SYSTEMS IN DEFENSE SYSTEMS.

The PGED was recognized with concept 4 at Masters and Doctoral level by CAPES in December 2008 and maintained concept 4 in the last three-year CAPES evaluation from 2010 to 2012.
